Resumen:
Factor de impacto (2012): 1,274 / Journal Ranking: Q4. Background: The creation of the Biobank, a resourcepertaining to the Spanish Renal Research Network(REDinREN) promotes advances in clinical research onkidney disease in Spain. The Biobanks aims are to generatean archive of clinical samples and associated data, furnishthose samples to research teams, and coordinate withEuropean biobanks. Method: Applicable legislation had tobe complied with in order to launch the Biobank project(Biomedical Research Law, Data Protection Law andBiological Sample Transport Regulations). A strict workprotocol and a new database for the Networks clinical datawere also implemented. Results: Over time, the Biobankhas acquired additional infrastructure and qualifiedpersonnel. In 2010, 2953 new patient samples werecollected, giving a total of 37 043 stored vials containingdifferent types of samples. Furthermore, the Biobank iscurrently participating in eleven research projects.Discussion: Although the Biobank was originally designedfor REDinREN use, we must take joint action to make thisbiological sample storage system and the many possibilitiesit offers available to the entire nephrological communitywith a view to promoting kidney disease research.
