Consequential LCA (C-LCA), Agri Industrial Symbiosis and Waste Biorrefinery. a Literature Review

This article is a review of published papers in various journals and conference proceedings on the topics of bioenergy and biorefinery, waste to energy, waste to wealth and agri industrial symbiosis, between January 2006 and June 2016. Around 135 papers are identified. The article intends to build a map of concepts and its evolution, in the areas of agri industrial symbiosis and biorefinery schemes from a consequential LCA approach. The literature is analyzed by theoretical and methodological advances as well as case studies applications. Through the development of a set of criteria to value each article’s approach, a ranking of importance is settled, from which different key elements are identified as potential components of a model, that ultimately aims to fulfil complementary objectives: help building value on waste biomass by efficiently managing agricultural waste streams.The late emergence of these topics, blooming along the circular economy approach, have been observed, and some peculiar overlapping of ideas has been identified. These many perspectives over a complex issue inspired a phD thesis on how to efficiently model waste biomass as a resource, in the agri industrial conglomerate, considering its territorial expression. This project is being undertaken and it's expected to be ready within 4 years.
