Resumen:
Background: The Fogarty International Centers of the United States National Institutes of Health includes the International Training and Research in Environmental and Occupational Health (ITREOH) Program. Results: The International Training Program in Environmental Toxicology and Public Health Center, part of the ITREOH group of Centers, is based at the University of California, Davis and has major efforts centered at the public universities in Montevideo, Uruguay and Salta, Argentina. This Center was first funded in the second cycle of ITREOH grants, in 2002. Initial efforts were focused in Uruguay; significant activities in Salta were only begun in 2005. Training and research efforts in Salta are centered in the College of Engineering, which is unconventional for NIH funding in public health. Conclusions: This paper describes the philosophical basis for integration of training in engineering with environmental toxicology, microbiology, and public health, historical and current accomplishments of this program, and its future goals.
