Resumen:
Fatigue is the primary source of failure in welded structures and comprehensive assessment rules are needed to avoid failures. Welds are particularly susceptible because of the severe stress concentration and flaws they introduce. Specific aspects of fatigue assessment rules for weldments which are influenced by the fact that fatigue crack growth dominates their lives are addressed in this paper. Attention is given particularly to the evolution of surface crack aspect ratios and crack coalescence stages, which are strongly dependent on particular features of toe geometry.
