Resumen:
shacked western Chile. The epicenter was located in the Chilean Sea, in front of the towns of
Curanipe and Cobquecura, about 150 kilometers northwest of Concepción. Surely an event of
this magnitude suggests us that it may have produced important changes in the crust. In the days
later, there was general interest in the community about the displacement occurred, and
particularly in the Georreferencing area, for the consequences of this event on the Argentine
framework.
In the objective of estimate the deformations produced in the central and western region of
Argentina and Chile, this work focused on the analysis of solutions (weekly coordinates) of the
permanent GNSS stations, generated by SIRGAS.
SIRGAS`s project, in which the authors are actively involved since 2007, is the basis for the
development of projects committed to the generation and use of geo-referenced information in
the region, in both levels, national and international. It provides reference coordinates for practical
applications such as engineering projects, digital geographic information management, spatial
data infrastructures, etc. In response to this event, SIRGAS has proved a successful platform for
scientific applications allowing the estimation of deformations of the earth´s crust.
The estimation of deformation was performed upon the permanent stations of the SIRGASCON
network, but the study was focused on the stations of central west Argentina, near the
epicenter. We used fixed weekly solutions adjusted to the International Terrestrial Reference
Frame ITRF2005, from 2007 to the date.
In this paper we show the results obtained from the tendency of displacement showed by the
permanent stations analyzed before the earthquake, the abrupt change in the coordinates
consequence of the earthquake and the displacement observed in the following months. Finally
we evaluate the impact of this earthquake in the regional frame, considering that this great thrill
consequently caused changes in the position of permanent GNSS stations across the two
countries.
We conclude of the importance of active frames, that allow for continuous updating, over
the passive ones.
