The chapter discusses the question of the historical social legimitacy of the Buenos Aires Police Force. Focusing on a deep crisis between the police and the "people" in the 1920s and 1930s, the article analyzes the symbolic construction of a police figure that may be perceived as closer to society than the most threatening forces, linked to repressive governments and anti-Communist campaigns.
