Resumen:
Growth-rings of woods from the Río Turbio Formation (Eocene), Santa Cruz province, Patagonia, and from the La Meseta Formation (Eocene-Oligocene), Seymour Island (Vicecomodoro Marambio), Antárctica, are compared. Growth-rings of Fagaceae from Río Turbio are wide and uniform, indicating that the environment was favourable for tree growth. These conditions prevailed in the área during part of the Eocene, allowing the development of a community that occupied topographycally high ecological niches. Coniferous wood from the La Meseta Formation has narrow and sensitive growth rings, extremely well defined and shows marked seasonality, indicating that the climate in Seymour Island during the Eocene-Oligocene was unfavourable for tree growth.
