Resumen:
This study aims to evaluate potentially beneficialproperties of 20 strains of vaginal lactobacilli isolated fromwomen in Tucumán, Argentina, by determining acid andhydrogen peroxide production and auto-aggregationability. The microorganisms were characterised geneticallyby amplified ribosomal 16S-DNA restriction analysis(ARDRA). Lactobacillus gasseri and L. rhamnosus were thepredominant species identified among the 20 vaginallactobacilli strains. Most achieved low pH values after 12 hincubation at 37°C and produced hydrogen peroxide instatic culture. However, pH decrease and semi-quantitativehydrogen peroxide production of most homofermentativelactobacilli were significantly higher than those ofheterofermentative lactobacilli. Of the 20 strains studied, only three demonstrated remarkable auto-aggregationpatterns. Four strains were selected for possible use in aprobiotic product for vaginal application; however, furtherin vitro study of other potentially probiotic characteristics isrequired before attempting clinical trials
