Resumen:
The reactions of selective hydrogenation of diketones enable the chemists to synthesize many fine chemical
products. There are two possible products of hydrogenation of diketones: the -hidroxyketone and the ,-
alkanediol. Selective hydrogenation of 2,3-butanedione (diacetyl, DC) to 3-hidroxy-2-butanone (acetoin, AC) is an
example of this type of reactions, the product being of special interest to the industry of flavours and fragrances.
Our group has recently developed a special kind of support of mixed organic-inorganic nature that has been
proved to have enhanced mechanical and chemical properties. These composites were employed for preparing
Pd catalysts (0.3% loading). They were tested in the reaction of hydrogenation of 2,3-butanedione, acetoin being
obtained as main product. A kinetic study was performed in order to get an insight into the underlying mechanism
and to get information on the values of the reaction rate parameters.
