Resumen:
In order to evaluate maize Herculex ® I (HXI) effectiveness to control S. frugiperda, HXI plants were sampled systematically from February to April 2008. Three treatments were evaluated: treatment 1: 250 plants with damage; treatment 2: 250 plants without damage and treatment 3: 600 plants with and without damage. At vegetative stage, assessments were made according to Davis scale and at reproductive stage, the presence of larvae and instars was recorded. In treatment 1, it is evident that although the plants selected already presented fall armyworm damage when the trial started, they eventually recovered. It can be observed that at the end of the vegetative stage, from a total of 252 plants 97.6% showed no damage (scores 0-1). With respect to the other treatments, in general for all the dates monitored, plants were not damaged or had few "pin-hole" type lesions on whorl leaves. Generally for the three treatments, it was observed that by the end of the vegetative stage, more than 96% of plants presented no damage and that type ≤ 4 damage never exceeded 4.5%. During the reproductive stage, in the assessments made on leaves and ears, early larval instars (L1 to L3) were detected in all treatments. In all cases, 72% of total larvae found were L1. Most plants showed a single larva visible at the time of evaluation. Based on what was mentioned above, the results show that TC 1507 Herculex ® I (HXI) can be considered an important tool to control S. frugiperda effectively.
