Resumen:
The development and implementation of technologies for the treatmentof hospital disinfectant liquids is imperative to enable their safedischarge to sewage and biological treatment plants. The effectivenessof the homogeneous Fenton oxidation of Benzalkonium Chlorides–BAC- (1000 mg L-1) was evaluated in terms of the impact of treatedBAC solutions on a non-acclimated activated sludge. In particular, toxicity and minimum inhibitory concentration of Ampicillin,Cephalexin, and Ciprofloxacin were assessed. Best Fenton operatingconditions were selected considering the inhibition of the respiratoryactivity, the loss of the biomass, and the changes in the antibioticresistance. Results demonstrated that the treatment of BAC solutions byFenton oxidation could be an effective alternative to preserve thebiological system and prevent antibiotic resistance development
