Composites made from a
styrene crosslinked unsaturated polyester resin and vegetable fillers were
prepared. Woodflour prepared from Eucalyptus saligna sawdust (a fraction of
fine sawdust particles of 57-74 micro m), was tested as a filler. The particles
were modified by a simple alkaline treatment (NaOH) or by further chemical
treatment with maleic anhydride (MAN). Diffuse reflectance infrared
spectroscopy (DRIFT) proved that chemical bonds are created by reaction of MAN
with the wood partic...
