The aim ofthis paper is to tackle some key elements provided by the discipline called inFrance Genetic Criticism (“critique génétique”) about the treatment of modernmanuscripts, and more specifically the object it defines as "roughdraft" (“brouillon”). After a brief introduction, we discuss about thedifference between “modern” and “ancient” (or “medieval”) manuscripts (§ 3), abouta “rough draft” as “semiotic object” (§ 4), about the relevance of a geneticapproach on Saussure’s unpublished notes (§ 5) for, finally, envisage differentways of such manuscripts’ edition work (§ 6).
