Resumen:
Tuberculosis (TB) is the second cause of death worldwide, mostlyaffecti ng the lungs (pulmonary TB, PTB), although pleural tuberculosis (PLTB) can be a frequent extrapulmonary manifestation. The immune system receives and sends messages to the central nervous system modulating each other through the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal axis and the autonomous nervous system (ANS).When studying patients with PTB or PLTB we have recently shown that both patients groups had increased dopamine plasma levels. To extend this observation and mainly because dopamine effects are strongly dependent on the types of receptors expressed by target cells, we have now analyzed the expression of transcripts (qRTPCR) for the dopamine receptors (DRs) of type 1 (DR-1 and DR5, both mediating inhibitory effects) and type 2 (DR-2, DR-3 and-DR4; mostly stimulating) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with PTB (n = 18) and PLTB (n = 12) and healthy controls (HCo; n=16).
