Resumen:
The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the Red Propolis from Alagoas (RPA) against Staphylococcus species isolated from air conditioner filters and surfaces of an intensive care unit in a tertiary-care public hospital in Maceió (Alagoas State). Sterile swabs were used for sample collection. Bacteria were grown in brain heart infusion (BHI) agar at 370C (24 hours), and presumptively identified by conventional biochemical tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined using the disk diffusion method. Fresh propolis was macerated to obtain the Hydroalcoholic Extract (HAE), which was fractionated using the liquid-liquid partition method, resulting in the Medium Polarity (MPF) and Medium-High Polarity (MHPF) Fractions. The antimicrobial activity of the RPA was evaluated using the broth microdilution method. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) were determined. HAE and fractions showed activity against staphylococcal strains (MIC, 64-1024 µg mL-1; MBC, 256-2048 µg mL-1). MPF showed lower MIC values. Our data show an antibacterial potential of the RPA against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus, including Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains.
