Resumen:
With the increased interest in developing advanced biocidal agents, it becomes necessary to design new biomaterials to enable local and gradual release of antimicrobial agents. In this study, a non-conventional biomaterial with long-term bactericidal activity that avoid burst release effects was developed by the entrapment of silver nanoparticles in liposomes and the later incorporation of these assemblies in collagen hydrogels. These systems showed improved mechanical properties and prolonged inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria, while remaining highly biocompatibility for epithelial cells. As a result, this novel bactericidal biomaterial might have implications in significant applications, such as wound therapy and tissue regeneration.
