Economic and Electric Optimization in Municipal Water Pumps

The distribution of potable water is carried out by means of different kinds of pumping equipment, which are in charge of supplying the required water flow to every point in the city at a stable and adequate pressure. Each piece of equipment has a contract with the electric distributor. This project studies the rate of each of these pieces of pumping equipment, working both individually or in groups, in plants, over a year. A common rate schedule is taken into consideration in order to obtain the correct electric contracting that results in substantial savings for the Municipal Government, plus a release of charges in the electric power lines. Besides, penalties due to low values of the power factor are specifically analyzed, implementing the savings obtained in response to its repair by compensating excess reactive energy. This research project is carried out taking the Municipality of the City of San Nicolás de los Arroyos as a casestudy. The results obtained indicate a high number of pumps with faulty contracts and a low power factor. These give the implementation of the study a significant amount of saving, as well as a contribution to the environment from an energy efficiency point of view.
