In this work we employed and compared multiple synthetic methods for the preparation of the mullite type compound Bi2Al4O9, aiming to explore its rather high photocatalytic activity, that has been recently reported. The resulting powders were characterized by means of a wide range of techniques including diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, the photocatalytic activity of each sample was assessed by means of the oxidation reaction of aqueous methanol under irradiation with a monochromatic visible light source.
