Although Antarctica is usually portrayed as separatefrom the rest of the world, the region has not only been part of the modernworld but has also played an active role in shaping it. Given that themodern world is closely associated with capitalism and colonialism, in thischapter we focus on the Antarctic sealing era to discuss how these two processesmay have been complementary and indeed mutually reinforcing in Antarctica´searly history. While the capitalist aspects of the Antarctic sealing industry havetraditionally been studied, the colonial aspects of the activity have beendownplayed.
