Resumen:
Rationate: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common cause of epilepsy. Post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) has been defined as seizures after brain damage caused by a physical trauma. The risk of developing PTE isrelated whit the severity of TBI, relationship between severity of TBI with onset time of first seizure remains unclear. The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between TBI severity with the time of the first seizure after brain injury. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from patients with seizures after TBI. Data from patients with PTE after severe or moderate TBI rated by GCS were recollected, brain CT scan performed within 24 hours of the TBI evaluated by Marshall Scale. Results: We included 71 patients with PTE. Our findings showed that early seizures were more frequent in pediatric population (84.6%). We also observed that 88.48% of patients with severe TBI suffered early seizures. Moreover, our results showed that the patients with early seizure and Marshall score of IV were a double that patients with late seizure (52.6 vs 26.2% respectively). Conclusion: Higher TBI severity, determined by GCS and Marshall scales, could be related with higher risk of early seizures.
