Paspalum L. is a genus with about 330 species mainly native of America. Several informal goups based on morphological affinities has been proposed for Paspalum species. Paspalum almum Chase (Alma group) has x = 6 as basic number of chromosomes. In this complex, diploids (2n = 2x = 12) reproduces by sexual mode whereas tetraploids (2n = 4x = 24) are apomicts. Karyotypes and meiotic behaviour for this complex are reported. In diploids 10 m + 2 sm and in tetraploids 20 m + 4 sm chromosomes were observed. Meiotic behaviour of both cytotypes agrees with previous reports. Karyotype descriptions are reported for the first time. Both chromosome races shares a basic chromosome karyotype formulae of 5 m + 1 sm. Most of the chromosomes of the tetraploid race can be grouped in quartets confirming its autopolyploid condition.
