Resumen:
Liver X receptors (LXRs) are nuclear receptors activated by cholesterol metabolites. Genetic and pharmacological studies defined them as key factors connecting cellular processes such as lipid metabolism, inflammation and cellular proliferation and death. In tumor cells, the activation of these receptors is associated to inhibition of cell proliferation and apoptosis induction through mechanisms that include triglyceride accumulation and cholesterol efflux. The main goal of this project is to evaluate the role of LXRs on tumor mammary epithelial cells. In particular, LXR expression profiles as well as the activation of both LXR isoforms were assessed in MDA-MB-231 (Triple-Negative Breast Cancer). The role of LXR on cell proliferation and migration was also evaluated with different assays using GW3965 (LXR agonist) and Compound L1 (LXR inverse agonist). From a pharmacological point of view, this study contributes to understand the role of LXR in controlling mammary epithelium homeostasis.
