The combination of the surface-adhesive propertiesof catechol rings and functional moieties conveying specificproperties is very appealing to materials chemistry, butthe preparation of catechol derivatives often requires elaboratesynthetic routes to circumvent the intrinsic reactivity ofthe catechol ring. In this work, functional catechols are synthesizedstraightforwardly by using the bioinspired reactionof several functional thiols with o-benzoquinone.
