Resumen:
According to recent accounts of proper names, rigidity and singular reference are necessarily intertwined. It is not possible to make a referential yet non-rigid use of an ordinary proper name. In this paper I will show that all available theories are mistaken on this count. First,I present seven recent accounts of ordinary proper names and rigidity thereof. All of them —whether predicative or referential— turn out to be committed to the dictum: no reference without rigidity. Second, following Lewis (1986), I describe scenarios of referential inconstancy where a single name may be used to refer to multiple referents and, thus, be used non-rigidly. After considering possible objections, I conclude by posing a general challenge for any theory of the rigidity of proper names.
