Resumen:
It is of the utmost importance to supply the forecasted energy demand of the upcoming years with a high contribution of renewable energies and concentrated solar power plays a significant role on it. This technology uses solar energy to increase the temperature of a thermal oil to produce power in a steam Rankine cycle. The aim of this work is to study the possibility of using an organic fluid to run the thermal cycle. 1552 different substances were analysed with the UniSim Design process simulator and 21 potential candidates were found with larger thermal efficiencies than water. Alcohols and acids seem to be the most efficient classes of substances from a thermodynamic point of view. Environmental variables such as toxicity and flammability levels, as well as transport properties were considered into the analysis to make the fluid selection process more comprehensive. 1,3-propanediol (CAS: 504-63-2) was found as a potential candidate to focus future research in finding novel working fluids for power generation cycles.
