Resumen:
Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women. It is the most lethal form of gynecological neoplasia since it is detected in the advanced stages of the disease. It is known that yerba mate (YM), one of the most popular beverages in Argentina, has beneficial effects on people´s health. In vitro studies show that YM extracts and its bioactive compounds have anticarcinogenic properties. Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) play an important role in the stability and solubilization of these bioactive compounds. There is no evidence of the effect of YM on ovarian cancer. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of a YM extract on the biological behavior of two ovarian epithelial carcinoma-derived cell lines, IGROV-1 and SKOV-3. Both cell lines were exposed to different concentrations of YM extract diluted in water (YMA) or NADES (YMN) and NADES without extract for 24 h. Cell proliferation assays were performed by MTT and cell viability by Trypan blue. Both cell lines showed a significant decrease in cell proliferation at high concentrations for the different treatments, while at low concentrations only the IGROV-1 line showed a different tendency. The number of dead cells for both cell lines increased in a concentration-dependent manner. The administration of YMN had no significant differences vs YMA action. The present work is the first evidence of the protective effect of YM in ovarian cancer. This study provides essential knowledge for possible future YM therapeutic applications
