Resumen:
The study of proper names is of particular interest insofar as the act of naming reveals different dimensions of the relationship between language and culture. The aim of this presentationis to analyze the morphosyntactic and semantic characteristics of proper names in Tapiete (Tupi-Guarani, Chaco Region of SouthAmerica), in light of the cultural practices of naming, the social changes that this group has undergone in recent decades, and the displacement processes in the use of the original language in contact with Spanish. This research is based on the information contained in a database of 130 anthroponyms collected through fieldwork among Tapiete speakers in Argentina and Bolivia. The approach to the formal and semantic characteristics of proper namesin Tapiete is based on the premise that the interaction between these dimensions is the bearer of pragmatic and culturally motivated meanings.
