Resumen:
Kidneys play a key role in glucose homeostasis. During hyperglycemiaa feature of diabetes mellitus, renal glucose handling isaltered which in turn leads to an alteration in water transport. Aquaporin1 (AQP1) is a water channel strongly expressed in proximaltubules. Although 2/3 of filtered water is reabsorbed in the proximaltubule AQP1 expression in diabetic kidneys and its possible role inthe alteration of water transport are unknown. Thus we decided tostudy if AQP1 expression in diabetic kidneys.Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats after intraperitonealinjection of 65 mg/kg Streptozotocin (STZ). Studies were carried outat 15 days and 5 months post injection.15 days post STZ injection rats presented normal glomerular filtrationrate (creatinine clearance 2.3 ml/min ± 0.16 vs 1.9 ml/min ± 0.15n=6) and no proteinuria. Histological observation revealed no morphologicalalterations. We considered 15 days post STZ injectionrepresentative of early diabetes where there hyperglycemia withoutrenal damage is found. In these rats AQP1 expression significantlyincreased in the diabetic group (100 vs 198 ± 28, n=3 p
