Resumen:
Human cystic echinoccocosis caused by the parasite Echinococcus granulosus is an important public health problem worldwide. Benzimidazole methylcarbamate compounds are presently used for chemotherapeutical treatment. However, a totally satisfactory drug treatment is still being sought. The aim of present work was to determine the in vitro protoscolicidal effect of rosemary essential oil against E. granulosus. Protoscoleces were incubated with essential oil at final concentration of 10, 5, 1 μg/ml. Viability diminished significantly in relation to the control group. Results of viability tests coincide with tissue damage observed at the ultrastructural level. Morphological changes included contraction of the soma region, formation of blebs on the tegument, rostellar disorganization, loss of hooks and destruction of microtriches. The efficacy of the essential oil of rosemary against protoscoleces of E. granulosus was demonstrated.
