Resumen:
In this article, we review some of the more advanced theories for modeling and analysis of composite materials with the finite element method. In the first part of the article, we describe the serial/parallel (SP) mixing theory as a general framework for combining the individual mechanical properties of the material constituents in a single constitutive model. A procedure for incorporating material anisotropy and fiber-matrix debonding effects in the SP theory is described. In the second part of the article, we describe homogenization methods based on multiscale theory for finite element analysis of the behavior of composite materials at micro- and macroscale levels. The capability of the SP theory to model delamination and interlaminar crack propagation in laminated composites is shown in an example of application
