Resumen:
The influence of processing conditions and substrate composition on the properties of mycelium-based foams (MBFs) was investigated using hemp fiber (HF) and peanut shell (PS) as substrates. The composite materials were obtained through a growth process in a microbiological incubator. A series of specimens were prepared, varying the ratios of HF and PS. The obtained samples were characterized through compression tests, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and water absorption and swelling according to the international ASTM standard. The addition of hemp fiber enhances the mechanical properties of Mycelium-Based Foams (MBFs). The resulting materials have the potential to substitute expanded polystyrene (EPS) in insulation and packaging applications. Graphical abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]
