Descripción:
Cactoblastis cactorum (Berg) (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae), native to South America and feeding only on prickly pear (Opuntia spp.) cactus, was found in North America in 1989, becoming an invasive alien species, and a threat to Opuntia-based agriculture and natural ecosystems in southwestern USA, with risk of reaching Mexico (Hight et al., 2002). Control tactics against the cactus moth, C. cactorum, are being developed to mitigate the expansion of the moth?s geographical range in the United States. The new species of braconid parasitoid described, Apanteles opuntiarum Martínez & Berta (Martínez et al., 2012) is under investigation and a good potential biological control agent for C. cactorum in North America given its host specificity (Varone et al., 2015).
