Resumen:
The “Río de La Plata region” that encompasses the area of influence ofthe Río de la Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) was shaped in the last centuries as a spaceof rural exploitation where the ranch, “estancia”, as a productive unit, played a centralrole. The original landscape of forests dominated by tala (Celtis tala Gillies ex Planch)and pastures was gradually modified by the introduction and multiplication of cattle andseveral plant species. Trees were central in the transformation of the landscape, shapingand delimiting spaces on the cattle ranches. In this paper we present the history of"Primera Estancia" (Magdalena, Buenos Aires) based on the analysis of variousdocumentary sources such as wills and their articulation with archaeological andethnobiological information. This productive establishment was settled in the middle ofthe 18th century and over time it experienced changes in its conformation, extensionand productive orientation, in connection with the political and economic situations andthe decisions of its inhabitants. Therefore, we can find different processes andmechanisms of delimitation and use of spaces with different functions, in which trees, mostly introduced, participated actively. Thus, through a case study and the integrationof different sources of information, we intend to review the long process of shaping thecurrent landscape, to identify changes and continuities in the relationship of people withthe trees, perceived by local inhabitants as their own and part of their identity.* EL ISBN SE ENCUENTRA EN TRAMITE POR LO QUE EL QUE EL INGRESADO ES DE FANTASIA Y NO CORRRESPONDE AL LIBRO.
