In this work the existence of critical periods in the formation of beliefs and attitudes is analyzed.In particular, the hypothesis of impressionable years (18-25) is explored in relation to havingexperienced a major macroeconomic crisis in Argentina (2001-2002) and its persistentconsequences on trust in institutions.Based on microdata from a recent opinion survey (2019), a regression analysis is carried out.Fixed effects by province of residence, age dummies, and other economic and demographiccontrols are included.The results suggest that young adults who experienced the crisis of 2001-2002 express, almosttwo decades after the event, a lower trust in political institutions -including the nationalcongress and the supreme court-, a greater perception of corruption among public officials anda reduced belief in merit as a determinant of individual success. The results are robust todifferent placebos tests and robustness checks.
