Resumen:
During pregnancy the fetus is tolerated by the mother immune system even though it expresses proteins that are different from maternal proteins. From the original idea that the immune system would need to ignore the fetus for its survival, the actual hypothesis proposes that the recognition of fetal alloantigens by the mother and of maternal alloantiogens by the fetus is crucial for the generation of an immune response that allows embryo implantation and placental invasion and, at the same time, that it must be highly controlled to avoid rejection. Both the failure to recognize alloantigens and the failure to control the immune response against them are immunological causes of gestational complications.
