Resumen:
This edited Spanish-language volume-- part of the Religion and Democratic Contestation Initiative, funded by the Henry Luce Foundation-- brings together the insights of academics and advocates, many of whom are currently at the forefront of impact litigation across Latin America concerned with the rights of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Trans) people and women?s reproductive rights. Chapters highlight the role played by religion in the region, in both promoting and limiting such rights. Contributors provide detailed case studies of often hotly contested issues around gender and sexuality in Latin America, a region at once remarkably legally progressive, particularly with respect to LGBT rights, and notably conservative, often in relationship to the rights of women. Each chapter illuminates these different relationships of religion to the law while offering an analysis of rights-based social justice movements in distinct national settings, alternately working or contending with governments and religious actors. Each chapter is also concerned with the ways that international and national legal frameworks and penal codes are informed by religious concepts and mobilized in defense of the rights of women and of LGBT people or to deny these rights. Coming to us from the front lines of these struggles in Latin America, this book offers timely clarity about how the law and particular rights with respect to gender and sexual identity are currently being interpreted, contested, and sometimes, transformed, by social justice and religious parties to such conflicts.
