Why do we need Masterpieces?

This paper works on some reflections about the status of the so-called Masterpieces. Its purpose is neither to offer a definition of them nor to elaborate evaluating criteria meant to establish some kind of canon. Its goal is rather to analyze the way they function, their modus operandi, their operational capacity. The first part of the exposition is addressed to clarify the concept; then, using some examples, it portrays yhe deal we have with them and the way in which they take part in the configuration of our lives, creating the world of meanings where we move everyday. Lastly, it takes into account a couple of observations about the instruments for the activation of master pieces we have and the task concerning aesthetic philosophy regarding this matter.
