Local Group kinematics an its circumgalactic medium

The ambient gas in galaxies and galaxy groups is extremely multiphase with colder material displaying a more filamentary distribution in contrast to gas at higher temperatures. In this talk, we will discuss the ionization level of different gas phases in the ambient medium of the Local Group and its relation to the apparent velocity dipole observed in the distribution of absorbing material around the Milky Way galaxy. We will also discuss the implications for the kinematics of the Local Group.
