Hybrid Energy Systems (HESS) improve various systems and can be used advantageously for electric vehicles. A proper energy management strategy (EMS) and sizing of HESS devices are essential to maximize the benefits. This paper seeks possible solutions to all these challenges, considering a HESS based on batteries and supercapacitors (SC). On the one hand, a rule-based EMS is proposed, incorporating a SC voltage regulation methodology to ensure its charge level at the end of the cycle. On the other hand, the optimization of the HESS design and operating limits of the EMS is carried out by applying a genetic algorithm considering a multi-objective function. Using weighted weights, the multi-objective problem is transformed into a single-objective problem. Remarkable improvements areachieved in the cost function when comparing a given initial system against the solution that includes the proposed EMS and the optimal HESS design.
