A wastewater treatment pond (WTP) is one of the most used treatment facilities in animal feeding operations. Nevertheless, in some cases, like in feedlot productions, their special operative conditions are usually not considered in design criteria. This work aims to develop a simulation model based on CFD (computational fluid dynamics) for batch WTPs implemented for wind, temperature and organic load characteristics of feedlots located in the Rolling Pampas, Argentina. BOD dynamics were found to differ significantly from an ideally mixed model. Oxygen mass transfer was found to be the main factor affecting BOD decay. An internal homogenizer is suggested as a possible fix.
