Resumen:
According to Stell (1989:363), whereas the Nivacle (Mataguayan) determiners na, ja and ca introduce entities that are ?known by the speaker?, pa is used with those ?unknown/known by reference?. Based on my fieldwork data, I argue that the primary distinction the Nivaĉle determiners encode is one of evidentiality, defined as the encoding of source of information (Aikhenvald 2004). The determiners na, ja, and ca indicate the speaker has (had) firsthand/witnessed/sensory evidence for the existence of an individual/entity, where the preferred evidence type is visual. Conversely, pa is used whenever the speaker lacks that type of evidence.
