The WorldHealth Organization (WHO) published in 2015 an updated classification of Tumorsof the Lung, Pleura, Thymus and Heart. In this last edition, most of theuncommon primary malignant tumors of the lungs are classified into one of thefollowing categories: epithelial tumors, which include sarcomatoidcarcinomas and others and unclassified carcinomas,  mesenchymal tumors, lymphohistiocytic tumors and tumors of ectopic origin. Amongthe various changes that have been introduced in this updated classification,the use of immunohistochemistry in resected specimens to fully classified lungcancer and the use of genetic profiling, are two of  the most significant to mention.
