Lithium is a fundamental element for a more sustainable future. It is essential for the fabrication of lithium batteries. Rechargeable batteries are essential for electromobility, and for energy storage of renewable but intermittent energy sources. In this talk I will discuss the characteristics of lithium mining by current available technologies. The advantages and disadvantages of present technologies will be discussed in terms of sustainability and according to the prospectives to increase production in the short and medium term. Emphasis will be given to aqueous resources in general, and to continental concentrated brines, which are the most abundant resources worldwide. In light of the limitations of present technologies, I will present some of the work from our group aiming at the development of disruptive technologies for the recovery of lithium salts from aqueous sources.
