Salix x fragilis is a hybrid willow, introduced in Patagonia to take advantage of itswood and rapid growth, the provision of shade and fodder for cattle, and to fix banks.The species has spread rapidly along the northern and central Patagonian water-courses, forming dense gallery forests. The willow hinders access to rivers and theircoasts, as well as navigation, transforms the landscape, modifies the morphologyof riverbeds and banks, causes loss of habitat for native flora and fauna, and con-sumes large volumes of water. Junín de los Andes includes in its extensive munici-pal common land several fluvial corridors within the great basin of the Limay river,strongly colonized by willow, which has led the Municipality to recognize the need forits control and management, requesting assistance from the authors of this report,constituted in the Chimehuin River Sauce Management Promotion Group (i.e. GPMSauces). Due to the growing and unsatisfied demand for firewood for heating in theregion, the GPM Sauces proposes combining the control of the willow with its forestuse. Project activities aim to preserve/recover the health of fluvial environments andtheir recreational value, to develop an orderly process for willow forest use, and toguide future actions through a willow management plan.
