Nitrogen heterocycles such as pyridinemolecules containing carbonyl, or its hydratedgroups known as gem-diols are widely used incatalysis and environmental chemistry.Particularly, its chemical structure is crucial fortheir performance as a catalyst. Working withthis kind of systems is a challenge since theinstability of gem-diol creates uncertainty overthe form of the ligand, so carefulcharacterization is particularly important.
