Resumen:
Approximately 60 million indigenous people worldwide depend today on forests(CBD Secretariat 2009), and 350 million people living in a forest or nearby havecustomary rights over these forest areas. Indigenous peoples, communities, localgovernments, as well as mining, logging and industrial companies, are claimingrights over the same forests, thus creating conflicts of different magnitudes. Manycountries lack the mechanisms or tools needed to address these conflicts, to implementreforms in land tenure systems or to allow participation of indigenous peoplesand local communities in forest management. These mechanisms are necessary toachieve sustainable forest management.
