Resumen:
We present here the results of a multiapproachstudy of the tectonic evolution of the Southern Central Andes (33°-36°S). Basedon structural geology and geodynamic numerical modeling we investigate theinfluence of the crustal structural and composition inheritance and lithosphericthickness on the deformation mode. For this, we conducted our research at twoscales: (i) an upper-crust scale assessing the evolution of an area of theSouthern Central Andes (the Malargüe fold-and-thrust belt) by means of fieldtechniques and (ii) a lithospheric scale, developing geodynamic models to explorethe crustal tectonics under intraplate contractional deformation. Our results show that (i) previous faults andstructures suitably oriented were reactivated under the Andean shortening andthat (ii) changes in composition of the crust due to previous geologicalhistory leads to different modes (coupled and decoupled) of deformation undercontraction. Our research is part of the StRATEGy Projectbetween Germany and Argentina. The main goal of this project is to study in theAndes, its tectonic evolution, the related natural resources and the seismic, volcanic and landslide hazard linked with this mountain chain. The projectfosters postgraduate and researches exchange and the cooperation between thedifferent groups.
