Resumen:
One of the main challenges in power converters forphotovoltaic (PV) energy conversion is their efficiency. In thissense, discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is able to improveefficiency, mainly due to zero current commutation and thereduction of the reverse recovery losses. Furthermore, interleavedDCM power converters are able to extend this operating mode tohigher power applications, due to the reduction on the differentialmode (DM) filter requirements, by dividing total current amongN phases and interleaving its ripples. One additional requirementis that high efficiency must be maintained over the entireoperating range. For this purpose, the number of active phasescan be dynamically adjusted as a function of load power. Eventhough this technique, known as phase shedding, has beenused in continuous conductiond mode (CCM) and boundaryconduction mode (BCM), it has not yet been implemented forDCM. In this paper, the criterion for establishing the efficiencyboundaries as a function of the number of phases in DCM ispresented. In this criterion, the losses in semiconductor devicesand passive components as a function of N are considered.Furthermore losses in the input and output DM filters are takeninto account, considering the total ripple reduction achieved withthe interleaved operation.
