Resumen:
Introduction: In Argentina, the prevalence of overweight and obesity exceeds 60% of the adult population. Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to cardiovascular health and, although various mechanisms have been postulated as a link between both conditions, the evidence on sex differences in the impact of the consumption of hypercaloric diets on the cardiovascular system is limited. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of high fat diet on cardiac morphology in male and female rats.Materials and methods: male and female Wistar rats were fed high fat diet (HFD) or standard diet (SD) from weaning (3 weeks of life) to 14-week-old. At 14 weeks, body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and fasting glycemia were measured. Rats were sacrificed and retroperitoneal adipose tissue, left ventricle (LV), right atria (RA) and left tibia were removed and weighted or length measured. The area of LV myocytes was measured in hematoxylin-eosin stained sections. Results are expressed as media±SEM. Statistical analysis two-way ANOVA (n=8 rats/group; *p
