This paper summarizes recent progress made in researching early formative occupations (700 B.c. - 500 A.D.) in Quebrada del Toro (Salta, Argentina). Recent studies have documented a large number of archaeological sites with this chronology, showing wide variability in their locations, architectural features,artifact sets, and functional characteristics. This updated record include svillages already known and others identified in recent years, rock art sets, cave occupations, eaves grazing sites, among others. Information collected is used to discuss the organization and use of space model traditionally proposed for the area, particularly regarding the assumption that early village communities were economically self-sufficient. The results lead to rethink this concept in thecontext of socio-economic strategies that involved regional and macro-regionalmobility, and included formally and functionally different settlements located in microenvironments with differential availability of resources.
